A simple technique that results in crispy, tempeh-style tofu. Flavor this tofu with any sauce or spices you’d like to elevate salads, poke bowls, grain bowls, etc. Tofu is made from soy beans and offers plant-based protein. For every 6 oz of tofu, there is about 12-14 grams of protein. Tofu by itself is neutral in flavor and can easily take on new flavors from herbs, spices, etc.

Crispy Tofu Recipe
Ingredients
1 block (14 oz) of extra firm tofu, pressed (see below), cut into small, 1/2 inch cubes
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp arrowroot starch OR cornstarch
Optional flavorings: examples include 1/3 c bbq sauce, sweet chili sauce, etc.
Instructions
ProTip: Press your tofu to help remove excess water. This will help to keep the shape and firmness of tofu when cooking. I like using my tofu press from Tofuture. Alternatively, you can place tofu on paper towel on a plate. Place another paper towel on top of tofu then add weight from cast iron skillet, etc. Allow at least 15 minutes for pressing. When using tofu press (such as the one I’m using), you can store it in the fridge overnight for extra pressing.
- Place pressed, cubed tofu pieces into medium-sized bowl (see images below)
- Add arrowroot starch (or cornstarch) to bowl and toss to coat each piece of tofu. Tip: I like to use my hands to toss to ensure even distribution of starch to tofu
- Heat medium-sized pan with olive oil
- Add tofu to pan. Tip: Ensure that each piece is touching pan so it cooks evenly
- Cook tofu for about 5 minutes or until one-side is golden brown. Using spatula, alternate to other sides until tofu pieces are evenly crispy (about 3-5 minutes each side).
- Remove tofu from heat and set aside
- Add your preferred sauce or spices to bowl
- Add tofu to bowl and toss with sauce/spices, as desired.
- Serve over salads, bowls, or in a wrap. Enjoy!
